Paint Correction — Oregon City & Portland Metro

Machine polishing to remove swirl marks, light scratches, oxidation, and water spots — restoring your paint's original depth and gloss.

Paint correction in progress — swirl marks removed from dark paint panel, Oregon City

If you look at your vehicle's paint in direct sunlight and see a web of circular scratches — especially on dark-colored vehicles — those are swirl marks. They're caused by improper washing technique, drive-through car brushes, and wiping a dusty surface with a dry cloth. Over time, they dull the paint's depth and make even a well-maintained vehicle look old and neglected. Paint correction is the professional process that removes those imperfections through machine polishing, restoring your clear coat to a mirror-like finish.

Paint correction works by using a rotary or dual-action polishing machine with polishing compounds of varying abrasiveness to carefully and precisely level the clear coat. By removing a microscopic layer of clear coat from the peaks of scratches, the low points become flush and the surface reads as smooth and reflective again. The process requires a trained eye, proper lighting (we use high-output LED lighting to see all defects), and the patience to work panel by panel rather than rushing. PDX Mobile Detail Pros performs this work at your location, so we're not rushing to move cars in and out of a shop bay.

There are different levels of paint correction. A single-stage polish addresses light swirl marks, minor water spots, and light oxidation — appropriate for most vehicles that have been reasonably well maintained. A two-stage correction uses a cutting compound followed by a finishing polish and handles deeper scratches, heavier oxidation, and more severe swirling. We assess your paint under lighting before quoting so you know exactly what level of correction your vehicle needs and what results to realistically expect. Not every scratch can be removed by polishing — deep scratches that have penetrated through the clear coat to the base coat or primer require a different solution — but we'll tell you honestly what we can and can't fix.

Paint correction is almost always performed before ceramic coating or Paint Protection Film application, since those products lock in whatever state the paint is in. Sealing swirls under a ceramic coating means they'll remain for the life of the coating. For the cleanest possible long-term result, correction first, protection second. Many Oregon City and Portland customers also combine paint correction with our exterior detailing service for a complete single-day transformation.

✯ What Paint Correction Can and Can't Do

Paint correction removes defects in the clear coat layer — swirl marks, buffer trails, water spots, light scratches, and oxidation. It cannot repair scratches that have cut through the clear coat and into base coat or primer (those require a body shop). It also cannot repair physical damage, stone chips, or dents. Our technicians will assess your paint honestly and quote only what we can actually achieve. We never oversell the service.
